Growing Season

Well, summer is half over. It has been filled with ups and downs with weather, pests and germination issues. But despite the troubles, the garden has started to produce its bounty and we have been able to share it with neighbours and customers.

The early summer had very cool nights. Some of our July temperatures dropped to 5 degrees overnight, resulting in a slow start for some things that like heat such as beans, corn, and cucumbers. There was a decent amount of rain, and the temperatures have finally levelled out with good summer days of 25 degrees.

We had some cutworms, a very heavy population of potato beetles and chickweed. They pressured some of the crops heavily, and we tried moving some plants to healthier areas of the garden with some success. Weeds are still a problem in some areas, and we are discussing various techniques to manage weeds next year.

Some of our seeds struggled to germinate with some of the rain, cool weather, and weed pressure. The result is fewer squash plants, spotty lettuce, small corn, and no cabbages. But, for our first year, we have had a lot of radish, beans, peas, and much more that we have been able to share with our friends, family and customers.
